Panel sitting: Rs.10.71 lakh relief for farmers recommended

Sitting to continue in Malappuram today

MALAPPURAM: The sitting of the Farmers’ Debt Relief Commission continued for the second day at the Government Guest House here on Wednesday.

The Commission recommended a debt relief of Rs.10,71,066 to be given to 58 farmers affected by natural disasters. The cooperative banks that had given loans to the farmers agreed to waive Rs.89,033.

Two benches of the Commission heard cases of 103 farmers.

The bench comprising Varghese George and N.J. Jacob considered 52 applications and settled 46 of them. Six applications had to be kept aside owing to various factors, including the absence of affected parties and bank officials.

The bench recommended a debt relief of Rs.4,73,146 for 29 farmers.

The cooperative banks that had given loans to the farmers waived Rs.1,927.

The bench comprising N. Chandrasekharan Nair, K.G. Ravi, and Satyan Mokeri disposed of 47 cases after considering 51 applications. Four applications had to be kept aside.

The bench recommended a debt relief of Rs.5,97,920 to be paid to 29 farmers. The loaner banks agreed to waive Rs.87,106.

Maximum relief

The bench exercised its maximum recommendation of Rs.1 lakh in debt relief to Moideen Panangadan in a single case. In that case, the Urban Cooperative Bank, Perinthalmanna, agreed to waive Rs.68,109 from the loan availed by Mr. Moideen.

The bench sanctioned a debt relief of Rs.61,000 to Jilsakutty Paul, the daughter of an applicant who died.

The sitting will end on Thursday. Commission Chairman Abdul Gafoor will preside over the final day’s proceedings.
