Sirsi: More than 50 acres of farmland owned by different farmers on the outskirts of Sirsi town is degraded due to garbage accumulation and sewage water flowing onto the fields. The paddy research and seed production farmland of the Krishi Vignana Kendra, Sirsi, affiliated to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, which is meant for research and development, is facing a threat. The failure of the Asian Development Bank and the local municipality in completing work on the main sewage canal which passes through an adjoining agricultural land on Banavasi Road here has put farmers to hardship as there is now an uncertainty over their crops. The work is pending since the last three years. Accumulation of garbage in the canal has blocked the flow of sewage. As a result, it is overflowing onto the agricultural fields. Ravindra Kashiram Gavandi, a farmer, said that due to moisture in the fields because of continuous overflow of sewage, crops, especially paddy, failed in the last two seasons. The Paddy Research Station of Krishi Vignana Kendra has 15 acres of agricultural land for research and development in the area.
