Give subsidies directly, says Rythu Sangham

Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: President of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham (APRS) affiliated to AIKS-CPI, K. Ramakrishna, demanded the government on Wednesday to give seed and fertilizer subsidies directly to the farmers so that they could purchase quality products from the open market. The benefit was not reaching the farmers completely in the present system, he said.

Talking to newspersons here he said the seed and fertilizer being supplied to the farmers over the years was meagre in quantity and inferior in quality. Taking the case of seed groundnut supply, the former legislator said the maximum of 90 kgs seed groundnut being supplied to the farmers was sufficient for sowing only in 1.5 acres and the quality was also not good. The price of procurement would also be high invariably than that in the open market, he alleged. Thus, the amount of subsidy reaching the farmer was meagre.

Instead, the government should give 50 per cent subsidy on seed price in cash to the farmers at least for the maximum extent of 5 acres land holding.
