NCP finds fault with State government

Special Correspondent

Seeks justice to displaced persons

BHUBANESWAR: Even as the Naveen Patnaik Government on Wednesday said it was making all-out efforts to ensure justice to those being displaced by industrial projects, the Nationalist Congress Party blamed it for ignoring the interests of the people who were losing their land and homes to make space for industries.

At a press conference here, party’s national general secretary D.P. Tripathy criticised the BJD-BJP alliance government for extending all help to private companies to set up their industries even if the companies were suppressing the genuine voices of the displaced people.

Expressing concern over the recent lathi-charge of a large number of villagers who were opposing construction of a boundary wall for an upcoming steel plant of Bhushan Steel and Strips in Dhenkanal district, Mr. Tripathy blamed the administration for playing into the hands of the company.

Clarifying that the NCP was not opposed to the ongoing industrialisation process, Mr. Tripathy said the government should not turn a blind eye to those losing their land and livelihood sources due to various projects. The benefits of industrialisation should go to the people and the state and not to the companies alone, he observed.

As regards the party’s strategy for the forthcoming elections in the State, Mr. Tripathy said the party was gaining strength very fast. The party was planning to enter into an electoral alliance with the like-minded parties such as the Communist Party of India(Marxist), Communist Party of India and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, he added.

Asked about the possibility of NCP joining hands with the Congress in the State, Mr. Tripathy said Congress was a major party and the question of having alliance with it would come only if the party gave any indication in this regard.

The NCP leader further informed that the party was making arrangements to ensure proper medical treatment of Kalpana Dash, the young woman from the State’s Dhenkanal district who scaled Mt. Everest last month.
