Joshi for review of Centre’s farm and fertilizer policies

Special Correspondent

Says LDF government’s education policy distorting history

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Murli Manohar Joshi has called upon the Centre to review agriculture and fertilizer policies to avert food riots in the country.

Dr. Joshi told mediapersons here on Wednesday that all parties should seriously think of tapping alternative energy sources to overcome the crisis caused by the hike in oil prices. The oil price hike would have its impact on fertilizer prices and affect food production. The time had come to end the over-dependence on imported crude to meet the energy requirements of the nation.

‘UPA a failure’

Dr. Joshi said the United Progressive Alliance government had failed on all fronts. The four-year rule was a history of maladministration and mishandling of affairs. The economic policy was based on wrong fundamentals and should be rectified. There was no consistent effort to check spiralling prices. The Communist Party of India(Marxist) and the Communist Party of India which supported the government were equally responsible for the price hike.

Dr. Joshi said the Left parties should clarify their stand on the proposed nuclear deal with the U.S.

They should withdraw support to the government if they were opposed to the deal, he said.

He alleged that the Left parties were maintaining a silence on the nuclear pact between China and Pakistan. They had also not clarified their stance on the recent claims made by China on certain parts of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

The Left Democratic Front government’s education policy was distorting history. At a time when the nation was observing the 150th anniversary of the freedom struggle of 1857, the names of those who took part in the movement had not been mentioned in the textbooks. Even great saints and philosophers of the State had not been included in the textbooks. The government was waging a war of attrition against the cultural and social icons of the State, he said.
