Bangalore: The Karnataka School Quality Assessment Organisation’s report, which shows an overall improvement in the achievement levels of students between seven and eight per cent, indicates some interesting trends in the relative performance among the various districts and schools with different media of instruction. The improvement compared with last year is to the extent of 7.24 per cent in Kannada medium, 6.43 per cent in Urdu medium and 8.34 per cent in Marathi medium. While Marathi medium schools stand first with 78.04 per cent, Urdu stands second with 73.33 per cent and Kannada stands only third at 71.04 per cent. Marathi medium schools have done well in both Standard 5 and Standard 7. However, the Kannada medium schools have improved their performance compared with the last two assessment years. Girls have performed better than boys in the quality assessment test. While it is no surprise that mathematics is an area of difficulty where students have done poorly, social science follows close behind indicating that students have a tough time handling this subject too. Another surprise is that Bagalkot district, one of the backward regions, stands first both in Urdu (82.85 per cent) and Kannada medium (82.35 per cent), while Madhugiri occupies the last position in both. In fact, Madhugiri has shown a sharp decline in standards, falling form 10th place in last year’s test to 32nd place now.
