STURDIER FIXTURES: Chennai Corporation workers install octagonal lamp-posts near Fort St. George on Tuesday. —

Chennai: Anti-corrosive streetlight posts will soon replace the existing poles along the Marina Beach.

The new “octagonal streetlight posts” will be installed along the stretch of road from the RBI subway to the Gandhi Statue on the Marina.

The posts, made of galvanised iron, can resist corrosion caused by sea breeze. Each pole is eight metres high.

10 installed near Secretariat

According to Chennai Corporation officials, about 160 new lamp-posts would be installed as part of the beach beautification scheme. About 10 new lamp-posts have been installed near the Secretariat. The others are to be installed in phases.

The existing circular poles, which have a tendency to rust from the constant contact with sea breeze, would be removed.

The new posts would be fitted with 400-watt metal halide lamps that would shed white light.
