Charges against Mayawati baseless: BSP

Special Correspondent

Denies that land has been illegally acquired in the State under the BSP regime

LUCKNOW: The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party here has assailed the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, for making “baseless allegations” against the party president and Chief Minister Mayawati.

Reacting to the allegations made by Ms. Joshi a couple of days ago in New Delhi, a BSP spokesperson on Wednesday said that the Chief Minister did not possess even a single inch of land nor did her relatives own any land.

Stating that Ms. Mayawati had devoted her life to the cause of the Bahujan Samaj movement, the spokesman said that she was the only political leader in the country to have declared her assets.

Responding to the charge of auctioning the police stations in the State, the spokesman said that the problem was present even when the Congress was in power. He said that unlike the leaders of other parties Ms. Mayawati had determined to put a stop to the menace. He said that the recent directives of the Chief Minister would yield positive results.

The spokesman denied that land had been illegally acquired in the State under the BSP regime.

The Cabinet Secretary, Shashank Shekhar Singh, also stressed that the Chief Minister was determined to root out the corruption prevalent in the State policing system. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Cabinet Secretary said the Chief Minister had shown moral courage to finish the corruption at the level of police stations.

He reiterated that farmers’ land would not be forcibly occupied and the acquisition costs would be paid as per the rules.
