This Day That Age
The fast-moving developments in Lebanon might climax in possible Western intervention competent observers said on June 17. Authoritative sources said that Lebanon has also asked for a United Nations Police Force while requesting for an urgent meeting of the Security Council to consider the situation in the country, which has worsened after the bloody battles over the week-end. The Government estimated that an international force comprising anything from 5,000 to 7,000 would be necessary to cordon off the Lebanese-Syrian frontier to prevent alleged infiltration of men and arms. It thought that United Nations policing of the 150-mile Lebanese frontier would relieve a large number of its armed forces from the frontier duty to deal with rebels more directly and effectively. The Lebanese Government is expected to discuss this question with the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, who is arriving in Beirut on June 18.
