IAEA agreement

This refers to the editorial “Make the IAEA agreement public” (June 18). The UPA government has always maintained secrecy and failed to take the nation on board on the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal. The time has come to disclose the facts of the agreement. Otherwise, the deal will go nowhere. The nation’s interest is at stake.

M. Koti Rajasekhar,

Secunderabad

Since the nuclear deal has far-reaching national consequences, the Prime Minister, who appears to be the most enthusiastic votary of the deal, should take the nation into confidence and promise to make public everything before he signs on the dotted line.

Col. C.V. Venugopalan (retd.),

Palakkad

The India-United States civilian nuclear deal seems to be reaching a dead end. The UPA government, which has lost ground on many issues including price hike, is losing its will to bargain with the Left parties on the all-important deal. As the Bush administration is entering its twilight stage, time is running out for the government to act. As long as our right to proceed with the strategic programme stands well protected, we need not shy away from the deal.

Salin Thomas,

Kottayam

At a time when we are becoming bankrupt due to the skyrocketing prices of petroleum products, we must look at the nuclear deal favourably. Who cares if we cannot explode another bomb again, as long as we have adequate and reasonably priced energy?

The Left is concerned about the U.S. calling the shots but it does not seem to realise that without an alternative source of energy, we will have to kowtow to the OPEC.

Ravi Katari,

Chennai

With crude oil prices reaching an all-time high, we cannot afford to insist that we will not sign the deal. Russia and China have signed their own 123 agreement with the U.S. and have given their people the nuclear energy option.

R. Sudarshan,

Chennai
