Shared parenting

This refers to the observation by Supreme Court judge Arijit Pasayat while hearing a petition for child custody that the growing number of divorce cases is having a disastrous effect on children and that the court was more concerned about the welfare of the child than the mutual recrimination of parents (“Hindu Marriages Act has broken more homes than uniting: judge,” June 18).

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, which India has ratified, says a child has the right to be raised by both parents. The solution in such cases is, therefore, shared parenting. The child should spend roughly equal time with both parents. This arrangement is working well in the West.
