Corrections and clarifications

A sentence in the fifth paragraph of an article “Diplomatic Notebook – In Syria, a cautious balance between Pan-Arabism and Islamism” (Op-Ed, June 17, 2008) was “When the younger Assad inherited the presidency from his later father, Hafez al-Assad, in 2000, he cultivated the image of a moderniser who wanted to ease up on some of the restrictions that had made his country one of the most closed and repressive states in the region.” Siddharth Varadarajan clarifies that it should have been “late father”.
