Siddharth joins four others in the lead

Chennai: Anna University player R. Siddharth of Chennai scored a lucky win over his higher-rated opponent Shyam Nikhil of Madurai to be among the five leaders at the end of the fourth round in the Tamil Nadu chess championship here on Wednesday.

Siddharth representing Kanchipuram district joined B.T. Muralikrishnan (Rly), P. Maheswaran (Vnr), R. Arun Karthik (Che) and Syed Anwar Shazuli (ICF) in the lead with four points.

On the top table, second seed International Master Muralikrishnan of Southern Railway, Madurai had to wait until move 77 to win a pawn and convert that into a point on the 99th move via a bishop ending against P. Premnath.

In the second table, V.A.V. Rajesh, the teenager from Andhra who moved to Chennai recently to pursue his chess career did well to hold International Master Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank.

Rajesh played the king’s Indian defence and Babu went for the Samish variation and the players drew with pawn locked position.
