Temple car festival suspended
Staff Reporter
Tension between two groups in Sattur
SATTUR: The Sivakasi Revenue Divisional Officer, B. Ganesan, clamped a prohibitory order following tension between two groups over procedural rights during a temple car festival here on Wednesday.
The annual ‘Aani’ car-pulling event of Venkatachalapathy Temple that had been “temporarily suspended” would be held after another round of peace talks, Mr. Ganesan said. People of Sattur town and those from Anaikaraipatti have different roles in the car-pulling event of the temple managed by the Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments. While one group should push it from behind another should regulate (steer with wooden logs) its direction.
RDO and Sattur Tahsildar, C. Thangaiah, conducted several rounds of talks with both the groups. As they had a dispute over the permissible number of persons from each side, the officials had laid down certain conditions on the time of arrival at the car venue.
However, one of the groups turned up over an hour late, which was objected to by the other group. Both the groups blocked roads separately.
The Tahsildar and the Sattur Deputy Superintendent of Police, C. Kumaravel, pacified them. The RDO said that people had been moved out of the area and the situation was under control. A large number of police personnel have been deployed.
