Electricity Board has started generating 10 MW power at Suriliyar with the water released Agriculture works partially hit owing to erratic power cut in Periyakulam THENI: With comfortable storage in almost all dams in the district and in Periyar dam, farm activities in several parts of the district and power generation are in full swing. However, erratic power supply affects irrigation farm work in certain areas. Responding to the repeated requests from farmers, Public Works Department engineers have stepped up discharge further from Periyar dam to irrigate 14,707 acres in Cumbum valley that stretched till Veerapandi, eight km away from Theni town. Discharge from the dam was 400 cusecs. Transplantation would commence in the valley shortly as raising of nurseries were at finishing stage at several areas. Initially, 200 cusecs of water had been released from the dam on June 1, as construction of check dam at head works of 18th canal scheme was in progress. Later, water release was increased to 350 cusecs. Farmers were happy over this increase in discharge from the dam. “Every day’s delay in getting water would certainly affect crop growth at later stage and generate lower yield at harvesting,” they opined. With the on set of monsoon, Periyar dam has started receiving water from its catchments, thanks to intermittent showers since last week. Water levelWater level stood at 132 feet, just four feet below the permissible level of 136 feet. Inflow into the dam was 127 cusecs. But water level in Vaigai dam went down sharply, thanks to huge discharge for irrigation of over 45,000 acres in Madurai and Dindigul districts. Water level was 64.37 feet and the discharge 942 cusecs. Total storage was 4,492 mcft only. Except Tekkadi and Periyar dam that recorded two mm rain each, there was no rainfall in the district. Agriculture activities were partially hit owing to erratic power cut in Periyakulam and surrounding areas. Despite sufficient water for irrigation, we could not utilise them properly to raise crops owing to power crisis, farmers worried. Tamil Nadu Electricity Board engineers have started generating 10 MW power initially at Suriliyar power station with the water released from Upper Manalar dam. Total production capacity of the generator was 35 MW.
