NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government would now be providing computers in madrasas to enable children studying there to acquire wider knowledge along with traditional education, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the Muslim community here. Elaborating on various steps initiated by the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre and the Delhi Government for the welfare of the community, the Chief Minister said it was also important that Muslims take up employment-oriented courses and professions and do not restrict themselves to certain traditional trades. Ms. Dikshit said it was vital that people from the community developed their skills and competed in this era of excellence. The knowledge of computers would empower the youth from the community to face the challenges in the fast-changing world, she added. The Chief Minister said while the UPA Government had for the first time created a separate Ministry for Minority Affairs, the Delhi Minorities Commission had rendered substantial contribution in safeguarding the interests of Muslims. She said at a time when people from all religions were facing poverty, the Delhi Government had taken various steps for the welfare of the poor. An ambitious plan had been drawn up to provide low-cost houses to the poor and for this applications would soon be invited. This scheme would also benefit poor Muslim families in Delhi, she added.
