The victim and the assailant admitted to hospital Girl’s marriage was scheduled for next year BANGALORE: A teenager who spurned a marriage proposal is battling for her life after her neighbour, who proposed to her, allegedly slashed her throat and stabbed her in the abdomen, on Wednesday. The youth later allegedly attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling. The incident took place in Byatarayanapura police limits when a 17-year-old girl spurned the proposal of the 25-year-old Shiva, an autorikshaw driver and her neighbour. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Harishekaran said the condition of the girl was critical while the boy was recovering. Both are being treated at Victoria Hospital. According to police, Shiva was staying next door to the girl in Avalahalli 1st Main and was a frequent visitor to her house. The girl’s father, who works in the Police Department, had arranged her marriage with another boy next year. Shiva, who was apparently upset with this, came to meet the girl on Wednesday when she was with her grandmother. While Shiva was discussing the issue with the girl, the conversation turned into a heated exchange of words. In a fit of rage, Shiva allegedly attacked and injured the girl, the police said. Later, Shiva allegedly tried to hang himself from the ceiling. The girl’s grandmother shouted for help. Neighbours took the girl and Shiva to the emergency wing of the Victoria Hospital. “The girl has undergone an operation and she is recovering,” Mr. Harishekaran said. A large number of relatives of the girl and Shiva came to the hospital. The parents of the girl were in a state of shock. “We do not know anything about the incident. I have come here to see the condition of Shiva,” said Prakash, an autorickshaw driver.
