Post-graduate course in tropical medicine

Equipment worth Rs. 1.85 crore in virology lab
Once operational, facility to be the largest in Asia

HYDERABAD: Fever Hospital is set to get recognition from Medical Council of India (MCI) for its post-graduate courses in tropical medicine. For the last one year, the hospital authorities have been meticulously plugging ‘gaps’, which were highlighted by MCI officials, to achieve recognition for the post-graduate courses.

The modernisation works in the hospital — which once recognised will be the first teaching hospital in the country to offer PG course in tropical medicine — are nearing to an end.

The construction of the advanced virology laboratory, vital to identify viral outbreaks in twin cities and MCI recognition, is also in full swing.

MCI inspection

During their last inspection, MCI officials had raised objections and suggested improvement of existing facilities in the hospital as a precondition for recognition. A new library facility, preparation of database, patients’ medical records, full-fledged records section and a viral laboratory were suggested by the MCI inspection team.

“The construction part of the virology lab is in full swing and we are hoping it will be completed in a month or two. We are just waiting for the air-conditioning work in the lab to be taken up.

Apart from that, a vital aspect is the equipment worth Rs. 1.85 crore,” Superintendent of Fever Hospital Dr. P. Prasad said.

The hospital authorities have informed that other MCI suggestions including a records section and a library have been met.

Online library

In fact, officials pointed out that the hospital now boasts of online library and resources can be accessed by students online. The virology lab conforms to the Bio Safety Level 2 (BSL2), which means that personnel manning the facility would be competent to handle pathogenic agents and will work directly under senior researchers.

“The MCI team is expected to check all these facilities before taking any decision. Once operational, the facility would be the largest in Asia and even a notch better that existing labs in the country,” Dr. Prasad said.
