Atul’s wife withdraws plea in High Court

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Meera Rao, wife of Atul Rao who was allegedly in custody of the Udupi police following the mysterious death of Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat’s wife Padmapriya in Delhi, on Wednesday withdrew a habeas corpus petition she had filed before the Karnataka High Court.

Ms. Rao had filed the petition on Tuesday and sought a direction to the Udupi police to produce her husband before the court and also release him.

In her petition, she had said that her husband was picked up on June 14 and since then he could not be contacted. Repeated pleas to the Superintendent of Police, Udupi, and Inspector of Udupi to allow her to contact Atul were of no avail. The habeas corpus petition was posted on Wednesday before a Division Bench comprising Justice K. Sreedhar Rao and Justice L. Narayanaswamy.

When the matter came up, counsel for Meera Rao filed a memo seeking to withdraw the petition. The Bench accepted the memo and permitted Meera Rao to withdraw the petition.
