Arjun’s caution on fake varsities
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The government has cautioned parents and students against enrolment in “unrecognised or dubious” educational institutions. The advice comes at the start of the academic session and the University Grants Commission identifying 21 “fake universities.”
In an appeal to students, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said: “You should not merely go by advertisements issued in the media by higher educational institutions, but satisfy yourselves by all counts in respect of quality and statutory recognition.”
Mr. Singh said the UGC, the All-India Council for Technical Education and other statutory bodies have been asked to keep an eye on misleading advertisements and check the veracity of “tall claims.”
He urged the media not to carry bogus and baseless advertisements intended to defraud unsuspecting parents and students even if the refusal meant loss of revenue to them.
The UGC recently came out with a State-wise list of fake universities, including seven in the National Capital and eight in Uttar Pradesh.
