KOCHI: Clean Kochi Movement, an initiative by Kerala Builders’ Forum, has proposed setting up a plastic shredding facility and to use the shredded plastic in road building. A meeting called by District Collector Dr. M. Beena on June 26 will discuss the use of shredded plastic for polymerised road tarring. Use of plastic in road building is one of the steps being mooted to recycle plastic as part of sustainable waste management in the city areas. Kabeer B. Haroon, coordinating the efforts of Kerala Builders’ Forum said that waste management systems had been established in 52 residential complexes in the city. These flats are located in various parts of the city like Thevara, Panampally Nagar, Kakkanad etc, said Mr. Haroon. Bio-degradable waste from these flats are being collected and treated to turn it into fertilizer for agricultural purposes, he said. The success of the efforts in the 52 flats has encouraged the Clean Kochi Movement which is being developed as a social mission to spread the experiment to other flats too Mr. Haroon said that Clean Kochi Movement was in discussions with Kerala Agricultural University on terrace cultivation.
