NEW DELHI: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Wednesday insisted that the Women’s Reservation Bill be passed in the monsoon session of Parliament next month. DMK organising secretary T.K.S. Elangovan told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Personnel, Law and Justice departments here that the Bill should be passed without any further delay. Other demands, including provision of a quota within the quota for the SCs, the STs and the OBCs could be taken up later. All India Forward Bloc general secretary Debabrata Biswas wanted the Bill passed in the current form, and said the other demands could be considered later. Committee chairman E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan told The Hindu that the 31-member panel had recorded the views of the Congress, the CPI, the CPI (M), the AIADMK, the DMK and the AIFB on Tuesday and Wednesday. All the six parties were unanimous in stressing that the Bill, which provides 33 per cent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and the State legislatures, be passed in its present form in the monsoon session itself. The Samajwadi Party wants to meet the committee here on July 8. The Nationalist Congress Party and the PMK will express their views when the committee visits Mumbai and Chennai. The RJD and the Trinamool Congress had not responded so far, Mr. Natchiappan said.
