GURGAON: Sixth-seeded Parul Goswami warded off a stiff challenge from Angelina Gabueva of Russia with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 victory in the pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the NTA Complex here on Wednesday. It was a commendable effort from the 21-year-old National Games champion, as it was Parul’s third quarterfinals in her last four tournaments. She had made two quarterfinals in Thailand after coming through the qualifying event. Parul next faces third seed Sanaa Bhambri on the morrow. Four other Indians booked their quarterfinal places. Top seed Ankita Bhambri will meet the tenacious Parija Maloo, while Poojashree Venkatesh will fight against Sweta Kumari Solanki. Shalini Sahoo went down fighting in three sets to He Chun-Yan of China, who will meet the other foreigner in the last eight stage, Sung-Hee Han of Korea.
