Vidyut powers Chemplast-Sanmar into final

Chennai: S. Vidyut’s 74-ball unbeaten 100 powered Chemplast-Sanmar to a nine-wicket win over India Pistons in The Hindu Trophy cricket semifinal here on Wednesday.

His last 36 runs, which were also the last 36 runs of Chemplast’s 190-run target, came off just 11 balls. Chemplast will now face India Cements ‘A’, which beat a lacklustre Indian Bank in the first semifinal by the same nine-wicket margin.

Earlier, Vidyut picked up three wickets to strangle Pistons after it had gone into the 15-over break at 100 for one. C. Ganapathy, who opened for Pistons, top-scored with 57 off 42 balls.

Vidyut hit four sixes, two of which rattled the upper tier seats at the opposite end of the stadium, in his final 11-ball burst. Giving him company at the finish was V.S. Siva, who scored an elegant 50. Siva’s six off medium-pacer Ganapathy, with his left elbow frozen like a flagstaff, was probably the stroke of the day.

K.B. Arun Karthik’s unbeaten 77 for India Cements ‘A’ contained several contenders for that prize, mostly off the back foot, springing to his full height from a crouched, feet-well-apart stance. He shared a 107-run first-wicket stand with J.R. Madanagopal.

With India Cements ‘A’ medium-pacers P. Amarnath, M.K. Sivakumar and S. Suresh sharing seven wickets, Indian Bank stuttered to 144 all out. It got there thanks to a gutsy 47 from middle-order batsman E. Suresh, who shared stands of 38 with S. Balaji and 42 with K. Sivakumar after it had slumped to 27 for four.

The scores: Indian Bank 144 in 29.3 overs (E. Suresh 47) lost to India Cements ‘A’ 145 for one in 23.2 overs (K.B. Arun Karthik 77 n.o., J.R. Madanagopal 41); India Pistons 189 for eight in 30 overs (C. Ganapathy 57) lost to Chemplast-Sanmar 190 for one in 23 overs (S. Vidyut 100 n.o., V.S. Siva 50 n.o.)
