Overtaking through the left

An office-bearer of the Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators’ Association said, “Show me a private bus that overtakes through the left side in Kochi,” when journalists at the Ernakulam Press Club confronted him with a barrage of questions on the driving culture of private bus workers and the rash driving they indulge in.

“If bikes can, why can’t we,” the next salvo from him, on being told that most bus drivers have mastered the art of overtaking through the left. “Bike riders do it at their own peril. It is not the case when buses do this: they endanger other road users,” – journalists retorted.

The Motor Vehicles’ Department must stop issuing new permits, the next statement from the office-bearer.

He seemed quite unaware of the fact that buses ply packed to capacity in most routes, except during the afternoon. Footboard riding is the norm during peak hours.
