KOCHI: A programme to distribute portable biomass stoves will be undertaken by the Total Energy Security Mission (TESM), an initiative of the Government of Kerala, soon. The project envisages distribution of about 3,000 stoves through district panchayats. The Agency for Non-conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT) will be the coordinating body for the project. Conventional biomass stoves have only eight to ten per cent efficiency. The stoves devised by Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad employ better mechanisms such as controlled air regulation which improves efficiency. More than 10 lakh stoves prepared as per these norms are in use in the State. These stoves are three times efficient than conventional stoves, using only one-third of the fuel. The bigger models used in schools and other organisations are much more efficient. About 25,000 stoves of this kind are being utilised in the State. The fact that both these types of stoves are fixed has been a limiting factor. Agencies engaged in energy conservation have been working on portable ones. Some of the new models are made of steel and resemble the conventional kerosene stoves. Small-sized wood pieces could be used in these stoves, mainly targeted at households. Panchayat funds could be utilised for the project and the stoves could be distributed at a subsidised rate, an ANERT official said.
