In high spirits: All India Radio employees explaining the salient features of the ‘FM Rainbow Pudhuvai’.

PUDUCHERRY: “Yellarukkum Yellam Undu” (Everything for all) will be the watchwords of the government-owned All India Radio’s “FM Rainbow, Pudhuvai”, all set to go on air on 102.8 mega hertz.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will launch the channel on Saturday at 6 p.m., to be aired live, at a function to be presided over by Chief Executive Officer of Prasar Bharati B.S. Lalli.

The channel will transmit for 17 hours from 6 a.m. everyday.

Station Director of AIR Puducherry Kalyani Ramachandran said Rainbows programme formats were designed not only for entertainment but also to fulfil public demand.

“FM Rainbow is an entertainment channel of the AIR, totally different in terms of its content and presentation. However, as public broadcaster, Rainbow will not compromise on quality for the sake of entertainment. The interests of the individuals and welfare of the society will be kept in mind in all aspects of the broadcast…In short, infotainment is the forte of our programmes,” she said.

A good blend

“Rainbow is especially concerned about children, youth, women, illiterate and rural population, as they are the vulnerable sections of our population. A judicious combination of entertainment and information will certainly enlighten the target audience,” she added.

Take for instance, ‘Vaanavil’ would offer youngsters an opportunity to appreciate classic songs of yesteryear in various Indian languages, besides taking the middle-aged and the elders back to the golden past.

Station Engineer P. Geetha Rani is confident that factors such as resources and manpower will not come in the way of the channel’s success. Having made a modest start, the channel broadcasts through its 3 KW-transmitter procured from the Chennai Station would cover Puducherry and parts of Cuddalore, Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai districts. However, when a 10 KW transmitter is installed after six months, more areas can be brought into its fold, she pointed out.

“We are striving to present a quality product to the listeners, right from advertisements to voice modulation,” says programme executive G. Swaminathan.

Job prospects

Apart from entertainment and avenue for advertisers, FM Rainbow would also offer an opportunity for talented youth of Puducherry to become Radio Jockeys, Ms. Ramachandran points out.

Most programmes have been designed live phone-in interactions. Listeners wishing to participate in these programmes can call 0413-2271660, 2271770.
