Guardian of the forests turns shutterbug

BANGALORE: Some of the best frames capturing wildlife in their abode are on display at ‘Encounters in the Wild’, an exhibition of Indian wildlife photographs by the Chief Conservator of Forests (Communication and Information) M.N. Jayakumar.

Treat

Showcasing over 120 photographs of 87 species, that includes 61 birds, 23 mammals and three reptiles, the exhibition at Chitrakala Parishath here is a treat to those having a passion for wildlife. The exhibition was inaugurated on Thursday by noted historian and writer Ramachandra Guha.

Rare pictures

Among the photographs are rare sights such as Draco (gliding lizard), Striped Hyenas, Black-shouldered Kite and Grey-headed Fishing Eagle.

The highlight of the exhibition is the sequence of a tigress killing a sambar in four frames, taken in May 2000. The brochure states that this is a record in still photography.

Mr. Jayakumar, who began his career as a Forest Officer in 1973 took to photography as a hobby 20 years later.

Hobby

“I spent my weekends indulging in photography. Animals and light should cooperate to produce good pictures. This is my first solo exhibition in Bangalore,” Mr. Jayakumar said.

A.K. Varma, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, well-known wildlife photographer T.N.A. Perumal and others were present at the exhibition, which is open between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. till June 25.
