Ever busy: Bazaar Street in Peranamallur, which the local people want to be widened. —
TIRUVANNAMALAI: Posters have been put up all over Peranamallur in Vandavasi taluk urging the State government to realign the 9-km stretch of road to be laid by the National Highways as part of the Arcot-Villupuram Road, in such a way that the road passes through Bazaar Street.
The Rs.4-crore project, undertaken by the National Highways about 10 months ago on widening the 9-km stretch of road from Sadathangal to Kannikkovil, envisages the routing of the road through Dharmaraja Koil Street, by-passing the Bazaar Street.
Traders in Bazaar Street alleged that vested interests had used their influence to divert the road via Dharmaraja Koil Street fearing that they would have to give their land for the road if Bazaar Street was to be widened as part of the NH project.
They said that they were prepared to sell their land for the road if it was to be laid via Bazaar Street as the plying of buses along Bazaar Street would increase the flow of visitors, thus aiding their business.
The traders said that they urged the district administration to alter the NH scheme so that the widened road was routed via Bazaar Street. If the district administration did not intervene to get the scheme altered, they would resort to an agitation on Monday. The Divisional Engineer, National Highways, Tiruvannamalai, said the road was being laid as per the resolution of the Peranamallur town panchayat. The 9-km road is being laid with a full grant given by the Centre under the road cess fund. The Bazaar Street comes under the State Highways Department. If the public want the Bazaar Street to be widened, they have to request the State Highways Department to undertake the work.
As far as the National Highways Department is concerned, the alignment of the road could not be altered as the estimates have been finalised and the work already commenced as per the resolution of the town panchayat, he said.
