Youth held for bid to dupe furniture dealer

Special Correspondent

PUDUKOTTAI: A youth, who attempted to dupe a dealer in furniture of Coimbatore by using forged documents of a public auction of the Pudukottai Municipality, was arrested on Thursday.

The police said that the youth, R. Mani (34) of Paachikottai village near here, prepared a document in the name of the Municipality bearing the forged official seals and signatures of the Municipal Chairperson, Municipal Commissioner and the Municipal Engineer.

The document allegedly ‘authorised’ Mohan to take possession of the old furniture and other iron wares for the ‘highest bid’ of Rs. 14 lakh in a public auction of the ‘Poor Home’ in the town, which was constructed decades ago for accommodating and rehabilitating beggars.

Further, the forged document appended an agenda of the municipal council for its ‘approval’ of the auction at its meeting ‘scheduled’ for June 28.

Mani used the ‘auction order’ to dupe Srinivasan, a dealer in old furniture at Saibaba Colony in Coimbatore.

He allegedly obtained an advance of Rs. 11,000 from Srinivasan for ‘executing’ the auction and derive the benefits.

Srinivasan, who grew suspicious about the veracity of the document, came down to Pudukottai on Tuesday, only to know that no such auction had been held by the Municipality.

The youth had taken advantage of the dilapidated condition of the Home and the old furniture available there.

Based on a complaint by Municipal Commissioner M. Ilango, the Tirugokarnam police arrested Mani under Sec 420 (Cheating) of the IPC.

The police is on the search for another person, Mohan alias Senthilvel.
