INTUC’s plea to withdraw Reserve Bank directive

PALAKKAD: A meeting of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) State working committee in a resolution here on Thursday demanded that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) withdraw its circular excluding the fishermen community from the debt relief scheme for the farmers announced by the Union government.

The resolution said that 15 lakh fishermen of the State would have got the benefit of debt waiver amounting to Rs.424 crore. But the RBI issued a directive recently excluding the fishermen from the scheme. While denying the poor fishermen of the debt relief, the government had given a subsidy of Rs.600 crore to the fish processing industry recently, the resolution pointed out.

The AITUC would organise marches of fishermen to the RBI offices in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam on June 28 demanding the withdrawal of the RBI circular.

In another resolution, the AITUC called upon the workers to join the national strike called by the trade unions on August 20, against the anti-labour and anti-people economic policies pursed by the Centre.

The wages were cut down to help the capitalists and the minimum wage was denied to the workers. The working hours had been increased and all the social security measures were given a goodbye, the resolution said.

The working committee meeting was presided over by AITU State president C.A. Kurian and the report was presented by general secretary Kanam Rajendran.
