Seeking water: A delegation led by Koppal MLA Karadi Sanganna submitting a memorandum to Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Hubli on Thursday.

HUBLI: A delegation led by Koppal MLA Karadi Sanganna has urged Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai to take steps to increase the water allocation to Koppal district under the Singatalur lift irrigation project.

The members of the delegation met Mr. Bommai in Hubli on Thursday and submitted a memorandum in this regard.

The delegation expressed concern over the reduction of water allocation to Koppal district under the scheme and said that injustice had been meted out to the district with regard to water allocation.

The delegation members said that as per the earlier allocation of 18.55 tmcft to three districts under the project, 40,000 acres of farmland in Huvinahadagali taluk of Bellary district, 51,000 acres in Mundaragi taluk of Gadag district and 36,000 acres in Koppal taluk of Koppal district would be irrigated.

“However in the meeting of Karnataka Neeravari Nigam held on February 22, 2005, the water usage under the project was brought down to 12.03 tmcft. Consequently, the farmlands in Koppal taluk to be irrigated under the project was reduced to 14,496 acres and at the same to time it was decided to bring 45,715 acres of farmlands in Gadag taluk under irrigation,” they explained.

They urged the minister to increase the water allocation to Koppal taluk.

Receiving the memorandum, the Minister promised to look into the matter and take appropriate steps.
