Gadget to locate fishermen developed

Correspondent

SIRSI: Coast Guard DIG Manoj Badkar handed over Distress Alert Transmitter (DAT) machine, a life saving device developed by the ISRO, to the Fisheries Department officials at a programme held at Baitkol Port in Karwar on Wednesday.

Mr. Badkar said that Coast Guard had requested the ISRO for a new device to locate fisherman in distress in the sea and rescue them in time. If a button in the machine is pressed, the message will reach Coast Guard computer and the Coast Guards will rush to save the fisherman in distress.

Earlier, it was difficult for the Coast Guard to spot the fishermen in distress in the sea. But the new device gives the location with latitude and longitude. Coast Guard Commandant Nitin Rathod explained the way to use the instrument in the boat. Surgeon Lt. Deepti Totad and A.A. Shaik, Assistant Director, Fisheries Department, were present.
