The stipend for advocates was stopped six months ago BANGALORE: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar on Thursday said the State Government would soon resume the scheme of paying monthly stipend to young advocates in the State. To encourage young advocates, the Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP coalition government had started a scheme for paying monthly stipend to advocates. However, the State Government had stopped paying stipend for the past six months. NotificationA notification would be issued shortly to restart the scheme, Mr. Suresh Kumar told presspersons after commissioning two capsule elevators installed by the Public Works Department at the City Civil and Sessions Courts complex here. Mr. Suresh Kumar said several court buildings in the State lacked basic amenities such as drinking water, toilets and restrooms for women advocates. “I have sought a report on the conditions in court buildings across the State and steps would be taken to provide basic amenities,” Mr. Suresh Kumar said. The Minister revealed that he would shortly meet the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa to discuss the budgetary allocations for the departments of Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Municipal Administration. CostThe Minister for Public Works C.M. Udasi said the two elevators had been installed at a cost of Rs. 66.75 lakh. There were 74 courts and others offices in the seven-storeyed court complex. Besides 25,000 litigants, thousands of advocates, public and court staff visit the court complex daily. As the existing six elevators were inadequate, two new capsule elevators, which can carry 20 persons, had been installed, he said. Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph inaugurated the elevators. High Court judges Deepak Verma and V. Gopala Gowda, and Advocates’ Association president D.L. Jagadish were present.
