HYDERABAD: IT giant Wipro on Thursday said ecological sustainability initiatives and making internal operations ‘green’ had led to a 13 per cent reduction in average power consumption in the year 2007-08 (294 kilowatt hour per person) as compared to 2001-02 (338 Kwh). Green initiatives had resulted in the company meeting 52 per cent of its water needs with recycled water. The company’s facilities in Gurgaon and Kochi were platinum and gold-rated green buildings respectively, by LEED, apart from the operations being certified ISO: 14001, said S.A. Sudarshan, vice-president, Wipro Eco Energy, a division of the parent company, at a press conference at the company’s Manikonda campus here. Eco Eye is a recently-launched, corporation-wide initiative, as part of which a framework for ecological sustainability has been evolved. The goal is to become a carbon neutral, water positive organisation, achieve defined levels of bio-diversity footprint, set new standards in recycling waste and enables employees to achieve a higher ecological footprint even in their personal lives. B. Krishnamurthy, Vice-President and centre head, Wipro Technologies, Hyderabad, said they would soon expand their presence by adding a fifth facility in the existing SEZ on the outskirts and a sixth facility in the SEZ coming up in Gopannapally.
