Making a point: State president, TCOA, P.Shakilan (left), addressing a meeting in Ooty on Thursday.
Udhagamandalam: All those in the cable TV business should adopt a ‘live and let live’ policy, said P. Shakilan, State president, Thamizhaga Cable TV Operators General Welfare Association (TCOA), here on Thursday.
Mr. Shakilan told presspersons that though the sector had grown considerably in the last about 18 years its problems had also multiplied. He expressed the hope that the Government Cable TV Corporation would help streamline the functioning of the sector.
The Corporation was likely to establish its roots first in Coimbatore and Thanjavur. Later, it would move to Vellore and Tirunelveli.
The number of cable TV operators in Tamil Nadu was about 50,000 and the number of connections about 85 lakh.
Coming down hard on the approach adopted by the major players in the sector, he said it should not threaten the livelihood of about two lakh families which were dependent on the business.
The Direct To Home system and the increasing rates of pay channels were subjecting the operators to considerable hardship.
He said the entry of the Corporation was expected to make the cable TV rates uniform.
