DATA COLLECTION: K.P. Unnikrishnan, Deputy Director General, National Sample Survey Organisation, Southern Zone, Bangalore, addressing the inaugural function of a training programme in Hubli on Thursday. Assistant Director V.K. Siljo and Joint Director (Panaji) R.C. Goutam are seen. HUBLI: The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) will carry out a socio-economic survey in 512 villages and urban blocks in four phases in Karnataka and 150 investigators will be involved in the exercise. K.P. Unnikrishnan, Deputy Director General, NSSO, Southern Zone, Bangalore, told The Hindu here on Thursday that the survey would be conducted with focus on domestic tourism, housing and slum dwellers. He said that after an initial survey, 24 houses in each village or urban block would be identified for collection of data. The survey would begin from July 1 and would be completed by July 30, he said. Mr. Unnikrishnan said the thrust area of the survey was domestic tourism. The survey would help in understanding the domestic tourism pattern, the problems affecting the sector and how much each household was spending on domestic tours, he said. However, lack of awareness among the people was likely to affect the survey and to overcome this problem, steps were being taken to create awareness by publicising the survey, he said. Mr. Unnikrishnan said there were moves to formulate policies at the national level to help the smooth conduct of the survey. “There is also a move to involve the local bodies and non-governmental organisations for creating awareness on the exercise,” he said. Steps were also being taken to provide a logo to NSSO and also identification caps for investigators. To clear doubts among the public about individual data being given to other departments, it had been clarified that only collective data of villages or urban blocks would be passed on and that would be used only for the purpose of making policy decisions, Mr. Unnikrishnan said. TrainingMr. Unnikrishnan earlier inaugurated three-day training programmes for investigators of Hubli, Belgaum, Bellary, Gulbarga sub-regional offices and staff of regional office at Panaji in Goa. Addressing the investigators, he explained the need for data collection in socio-economic and allied subjects apart from industrial and agriculture sectors. He told them about the focus subjects for the first round of the survey. R.C. Goutam, Joint Director, Regional Office, NSSO, Panaji, briefed them about the practical difficulties involved in the survey and how to overcome them. V.K. Siljo, Assistant Director, NSSO, Karnataka (North Region), proposed a vote of thanks. Eighty investigators are participating in the training programme.
