Harendra in sole lead

KOLKATA: Chandigarh’s Harendra Gupta emerged the sole leader at the end of the second round of the PGTI Players’ championship at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Thursday. Overnight joint leader Harendra shot four under 65 to take his total to seven under 98.

The second round could not be completed as play began two hours behind schedule due to overnight rain. Twenty-seven players were yet to finish the round out of a field of 108.

Ashok Kumar of Delhi was three strokes behind Harendra with a score of four under 101 after carding two under 67 in the second round.

Harendra stayed on top of the leaderboard because of his bogey-free 65. Having finished the first round at three under 33, his second round included birdies on the seventh, 12th, 14th and 15th.

Ashok Kumar had birdies on the third, ninth and 16th, and a bogey on the 18th.

Kolkata’s Rahil Gangjee (34, 69) and Chandigarh’s Ranjit Singh (35, 68) were tied third at two under 103.

String of birdies

Gangjee’s round of par 69 was marked by birdies on the first, second, fourth, sixth, 15th and 18th, and bogeys on the third and 10th. He also made double bogeys on the seventh and 11th. Ranjit made 17 pars and sank a lone birdie on the fourth.

Eight other golfers, including Digvijay Singh and Rahul Ganapathy, were tied fifth with a total of one under 104.
