Prakash and Maheswaran share lead

CHENNAI: Top seed International Master G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank and P. Maheswaran of Virudhunagar district moved into joint lead at the end of the sixth round of the Tamil Nadu State chess championship at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday.

Prakash, holder of four Grandmaster norms was at his attacking best in both games.

Big win

In the morning session, he stretched his tiny advantage into a big win with a flowing rook sacrifice against former National ‘B’ champion R. Balasubramaniam of ICF.

Later, in the afternoon, Prakash first sacrificed a pawn and regained it. Thereafter, he sacrificed two more pawns and castled on opposite flanks to win Arun Karthik’s queen which wrote the script of the game.

Prakash and Maheswaran, a second year MCA student from SRM College, are leading the table with 5.5 points from six games.

They will face each other in the seventh round on Friday. Five rounds remain to be played.

On course to a joint place in the lead, Maheswaran had quickly drawn Sudhakar Babu in the morning and defeated Syed Anwar Shazuli.

The top four players will play for Tamil Nadu in the National ‘B’ at Goa from September 15.

Sixth round: G.B. Prakash (IB) 5.5 bt Arun Karthik (Che) 5; R. Ashwath (Che) 5 drew with B.T. Muralikrishnan (Rly) 5; Syed Anwar Shazuli (Kan) 4.5 lost to P. Maheswaran (Vir) 5.5; Sudhakar Babu (IB) 4.5 drew with Vinoth Kumar (Che) 4.5; D.P. Singh (Rly) 5 bt T.J. Sureshkumar (ICF) 4; T.U. Navin Kanna (Tvlr) 4 lost to K. Narayanan (Siv) 5.

Fifth round: B.T. Muralikrishnan drew with S.A. Shazuli; Arun Karthik bt R. Siddharth; P. Maheswaran drew with Sudhakar Babu.
