Mumbai: Mountain training at Nagoya, Japan and hands-on training by Karate Master Gogen Yamaguchi proved beneficial for Indian karatekas prior to the 4th Commonwealth karate championship held at Edinburgh, Scotland recently. The young karatekas from Mumbai outsmarted superior rivals in competitions officiated by British referees and judges. “To be fair they were impartial and that’s why I am delighted to say that it was a red-letter day for Indian karate when the young Indians won two gold and five bronze medals for the first time in three decades. Karate is the second biggest practised sport in India after cricket,” said Chief Coach Kyoshi Vispy Kapadia at a felicitation function at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday. — Special Correspondent
