Sangareddy: The roundtable organised by the Andhra Pradesh Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham Medak committee on Thursday called upon the State government not to stop implementation of works under the employment guarantee programme during kharif as demanded by landlords. The committee’s general secretary K. Rajaiah termed as ‘unfortunate’ that several forces were against the programme in the name of shortage of labour. The Sangham opined that agricultural work could never be uniform all over the State. ConditionsAgricultural work depended on the local climate and other conditions like availability of water, seed and fertilizer. Hence, uniform ban on APREGP works could never be possible. Mr. Rajaiah said that a majority of labourers benefiting from the programme belonged to SC, ST and other weaker sections of society. Former CDC chairman Manikyam said that migration of labourers to other States had virtually stopped after the implementation of the programme. However he wanted the government to strengthen the programme. Telugu Desm Party SC cell State secretary Premanandam alleged that the programme had been diluted to benefit the landlords belonging to the ruling party. However the District Water Management Agency (DWMA) Project Director Jagannatham promised to rectify lacunae in the programme and examine the demand for continuation of works even during agricultural season.
