Forum shocked by Primark’s action
M. Gunasekaran
Export units asked to be cautious
TIRUPUR: Tirupur People Forum (TPF), a network of 15 civil society organisations, including leading trade unions working for the protection of environment here, is shocked over the decision of the U.K.-based retailer, Primark, to break ties with three of its suppliers for allegedly employing children.
In a statement here, A.Aloysius, convener and director of Social Awareness and Voluntary Education, termed the cancelling of export orders a sudden action without allowing them time for corrective measures.
Employers’ morale
He expressed the apprehension that the decision would affect the morale of employers and workers. TPF appealed to Primark to promote trade relationship with suppliers and safeguard the interest of workers.
Mr. Aloysius said that the forum was making this appeal in the interest of the workers in the garment sector.
He said that TPF was not only working to safeguard the rights of labourers, but also towards the economic development of the nation. South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association president Mohan P. Kandasamy said in a statement here on Thursday that Tirupur garment exporters were being punished for the mistakes committed by outside suppliers.
He asked export units to be cautious while entrusting sequin work to households through agents.
