KOCHI: Minor skirmishes were witnessed when a march taken out by Youth Congress activists to the Thrikkakara grama panchayat near here against the alleged administrative stalemate in the panchayat and its apathy in resolving the garbage problem turned violent on Thursday. Lathi-chargePolice had to resort to minor lathi-charge to disperse the activists who tried to barge into the panchayat office. The panchayat office had been under police guard since Wednesday when the news came in of the protest march. Baskets with garbageThe activists carried baskets filled with garbage and placed it in front of the panchayat office to symbolize the alleged ineptness of the panchayat authorities in handling the garbage crisis. The march started from Indira Bhavan at Kakkanad. K. Babu, MLA, inaugurated the dharna that followed. Shaji Vazhakala presided over the dharna. Premachandran, general secretary, District Congress Committee (DCC); P.I. Mohammadali, block Congress president, DCC members, Xavier Thayankery, V.D. Suresh and P.K. Abdul Rahman; M.O Varghese, Congress mandalam president, T.M. Abdul Kareem, chairman, panchayat standing committee were among those who addressed the dharna.
