“Restore NIT admission procedure”

PUDUCHERRY: Leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi in Parliament M. Ramadass on Thursday appealed to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to restore the earlier admission procedure followed by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) to enable students from the Union Territory to get enrolled in NITs.

In a letter to Dr. Singh, he said the decision of the Central Counselling Board (CCB) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to change the admission procedure followed by NIT would deprive at least 30 students from the Union Territory of their seats.

Before the CCB switched over to the new admission procedure, nearly 20 seats were reserved for students from Puducherry in the NITs functioning in 20 States across the country, Mr. Ramadass said. According to the new admission pattern, 50 per cent of the seats in NITs should be filled with eligible candidates, who had passed Plus-2 from the respective States, he said, adding that the remaining seats would be filled on basis of all India merit list.

Mr. Ramadass said that a few States dominated the All India merit list because of better schooling facility available there and it would be difficult for students from Puducherry to compete with those students. This new change in the policy takes away all the reserved seats meant for the students of the Union Territory, whereas those States having NIT would be able to enjoy 50 per cent reservation, he said.

He appealed to the Prime Minister to restore the earlier allocation of seats to the students of Union Territory, till the time an NIT was established here.
