TNMSC supplies 52 ultrasound scan machines

Madurai receives Rs.8 lakh from State Health Society for the mela

Initiative is aimed at having quality delivery of health services

MADURAI: A three-day ‘health mela’ is to be conducted in all Parliamentary constituencies in the State with funding support from the Centre. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation (TNMSC) procured and supplied 52 ultrasound scanners (with printer facility), each costing Rs.1.9 lakh, to various districts recently.

TNMSC officials told The Hindu on Thursday that Madurai, Dindigul, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga had been given one portable ultrasound scan machine that would be used for screening of patients at the health mela, which would be held for three days continuously.

According to Health Department officials here, the district has received Rs.8 lakh from State Health Society towards conducting the mela.

P. Mohan, Madurai MP, said that he had held an informal meeting with the District Collector, S. S. Jawahar, for this purpose and the exact dates/venue would be finalised shortly. As per the guidelines issued to Health Department staff in districts, there should be facilities for maternal/paediatric health screening, reproductive and child health issues, cancer, tuberculosis etc.

“The health mela is aimed at having quality and integrated delivery of health services in Lok Sabha constituencies and hence there must be effective linkage between preventive, curative and rehabilitation aspects,” the guidelines said.

Officials said that the ultrasound scanners now purchased from Larsen and Toubro had ‘direct plain paper printing facility’ whereas the earlier ones had fax paper, which faded over a period of time. A. Palanichamy, Deputy Director of Health Services (Madurai district), said that arrangements would be made after the MP and the district administration gave the nod for the proposed health mela.
