MISCREANTS’ target: The ‘pandal’ in front of the DMK office in Coimbatore, which was set ablaze on Thursday.
Coimbatore: A thatched ’pandal’ in front of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s district office near the Cross Cut Road flyover was destroyed early on Thursday in a suspected case of arson.
According to the police, a watchman from nearby premises woke up Dhandapani, the party office in-charge, around 4 am saying there was a fire in the ’pandal’. Mr. Dhandapani alerted the police control room and the fire and rescue services, and the fire was put out.
Police officers, along with forensic experts, visited the scene. They suspect that miscreants, using stones wrapped in cloth soaked in kerosene or petrol, might have hurled them at the pandal after setting them on fire.
The police have registered a case under section 436 of Indian Penal Code (mischief by arson in dwelling place) and formed special teams to nab the culprits.
DMK functionaries suspect that the incident could be a fallout of the party breaking its ties with the PMK. Police officers refused to comment.
