Grievance cells soon in Health Department offices in all districts

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: In a move aimed at redressing the grievances of 33,000-odd staff working in the Public Health Department and the general public, permanent grievance cells are being established at the Health Department offices in districts.

The first Friday of every month will be designated as ‘Grievance Redress Day.’

The decision will come into effect from July, as per instructions issued by S. Elango, Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, to Deputy Directors of Health Services in the districts.

Official sources here told The Hindu on Thursday that the decision to focus on grievances was to avoid delay by department staff in attending to requests from employees, retired staff and rural people.

Dr. Elango, in his communication to district officials, said that a nodal officer must be appointed specially for this purpose and all petitions received along with action taken report sent to the Directorate every month. A register has to be maintained.

“Many employees have to travel to the Directorate’s headquarters in Chennai with regard to service issues, salary increments and allowances, etc. Now, we will settle them in our district offices thereby saving money and time for our staff,” Dr. Elango said when contacted about the circular.

According to the Director of Public Health, nearly 200 employees visit the headquarters in Chennai every day, of whom around 125 come with issues like transfer and salary.

The department order also stated that a function must be organised for retiring staff on the last day of their service. Immediately, steps must be initiated to ensure that their retirement benefits reached them without delay.

The general public can now put forth their requests about availability of doctors in Primary Health Centres or facilities further required in a PHC in their area.
