Naval copter to rescue fishermen injured in mid-sea firing

C. Jaishankar

TRIAL run: A naval helicopter landing on a school ground in Ramanathapuram.

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Naval Air Station of the Indian Navy at Uchipuli has given its nod for engaging its helicopter to rescue fishermen from Tamil Nadu injured in mid-sea firing.

A trial exercise carried out on Wednesday to rescue a fisherman from sea and land at Ramanathapuram did not face any problems.

Most of the 146 fishermen, who were victims of mid-sea shootings since 1983, died because they could not be rushed to hospital within the ‘platinum minutes’ (first 15 minutes) and ‘golden hour’ (first one hour).

It takes at least three to five hours for the injured fishermen in mid-sea to be taken to the hospital at Rameswaram, which, again, lacks sophisticated facilities.

In most cases they have to be rushed to the Ramanathapuram headquarters hospital, a journey of another one-and-a-half hours.

According to the idea mooted by District Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar, when requested, a Naval helicopter based at Uchipuli will lift the injured fishermen and land on the Schwartz Higher Secondary School ground, which is bang opposite the hospital in Ramanathapuram.

Speaking to The Hindu on Thursday, P. Rajkumar, Station Commander, Naval Air Station, said Wednesday’s trial landing on the ground, classified as “rough and restricted” landing area, was smooth.

“It is possible to operate the helicopter for emergency rescue missions on humanitarian grounds.”

Commander Rajkumar said a proper signalling method would have to be developed by fishermen. There could be problems in lifting severely injured fishermen as care had to be taken to ensure that the procedure did not aggravate their bullet wounds.
