Excess violence buries the theme

Film: Kamannana Makkalu (Kannada)

Director: Chi. Gurudatt

Cast: Sudeep, Rockline Venkatesh, Doddanna, Ramesh Bhat, Adi Lokesh Sadhu Kokila, Deepu and Vaibhavi

Director Chi. Gurudatt’s “Kamannana Makkalu” clearly depicts the deep-set problems plaguing Kannada cinema today.

Although the elemental value of the plot has the potential for good and sensitive cinema, the director’s failings are evident right from the movie’s conception to its execution.

Besides its poor title, the film thrives on cacophony, farce and violent fist-fights punctuated with primitive mannerisms with occasional respect to comedy and balanced emotion.

Gurudatt, in order to please his audience, accommodates boorish dialogues and an overdose of violence that overshadows the positive aspects of the theme.

Set in a rural backdrop during a feudal age, the plot deals with the bonding of three reformed thieves masquerading as father and sons, who fight for justice .

Kamanna (Doddanna) is content to drink like a fishand exhale sound. Rama (Sudeep) fights often and acts intermittently, and Krishna (Rockline Venkatesh) infuses life into his role.
