Kakinada: A radar-based Automatic Identification System (RAIS), which will facilitate better surveillance of port operations, including movement of ships, will be installed soon at Kakinada port as per International Ships and Port Facilities Safety Code (ISPS). It has been made mandatory for all ports having more than 500 GRT (Gross Register Tons) to incorporate RAIS in their security paraphernalia. “RAIS is a combination of radio signals and visual displays on electronic charts, which gives instant reports of the activities in and around the ports,” says Director of State Ports K.V. Brahmananda Reddy. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Reddy said Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam ports were also prepared to induct the new system. Other non-major ports would acquire RAIS, for which licence had to be obtained from the Union Ministry of Communications in the due course. As regards the performance of minor ports, Mr. Reddy said the combined cargo handling capacity of 11 minor ports and three captive ports in the State would reach 60 million tons (MT) by the end of the current year (2008-09) following commissioning of Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam ports and 130 MT by 2011-12 when all minor ports become fully operational. Kakinada port officer A Diwakar Rao also spoke.
